Nanny & Babysitting Differences

NANNY: Person exclusively responsible for continuously taking care of children. She can work full time or part time. In-home or on a scheduled basis.

Tasks: While the responsibilities of a full-time nanny will vary from post to post, all duties listed below are regular nanny tasks.

  • Implementing and/or maintain the child’s routine
  • Driving children to school and activities
  • Transporting children to and from Doctors appointments
  • Cooking for children
  • Bathing and dressing children
  • Helping children with general hygiene
  • Organizing, hosting and attending children's play dates

  • Organizing sports and other motor-skills activities
  • Taking children on special outings to museums and the zoo
  • Doing children's laundry
  • Making children's beds
  • Tidying up children's rooms and bathrooms
  • Organizing and cleaning children's play area
  • Cleaning up in the kitchen after children meals
  • Creating a safe environment for the children to freely explore
  • Creating a nurturing environment
  • Disciplining children when appropriate in a manner consistent with parents philosophy
  • Fostering independence, as age-appropriate
  • Supervising and assisting with homework
  • Modeling and teaching good manners
  • Modeling and teaching responsible citizenship
  • Provide basic first-aid, as required
  • Administer medications, as specially directed
  • Ensuring the children spend adequate time outdoors
  • Serving as a trusted companion to the children.

In addition to these typical responsibilities, depending on the family’s needs may have other responsibilities.  The nanny’s responsibilities should be clearly articulated and written in a family/nanny work agreement. Nannies who take on additional responsibilities that are not related to childcare generally command a higher hourly rate.

While vague terms like “light housekeeping” are used within the nanny industry, parents and nannies should instead agree on a specific list of responsibilities to avoid misunderstanding, confusion and unclear expectations.

BABYSITTER: Person responsible to take care of young toddlers/children in short absence of parents. The schedules are very flexible to the needs of parents and the working days can be sporadic, although sometimes it can be a frequent basis. For example: every Friday night.

TASK: varies widely depending on the time (day or night), but essentially is attentive, vigilant and takes care of basic needs for children. She is a confident person and able to make quick decisions.

  • Cooking for children
  • Bathing and dressing children
  • Helping children with general hygiene
  • Keeping the children’s areas neat and clean
  • Disciplining children when appropriate in a manner consistent with parents philosophy
  • Supervising
  • Provide basic first-aid, as required
  • Administer medications, as specially directed
  • Serving as a trusted companion to the children.

Finally, remember it is important to find a babysitter in which you can put your complete trust when you leave home. All parents need to rest and indulge in personal fun extra curricular activities (like date night!) from time to time with a trustworthy care taker for their children.
